The Backstory

Picture the scene. You’re a rare dwarf magpie called Merle. People make fun of you because, well, you’re small, but also because unlike all other magpies, you don’t like to steal shiny things. It’s wrong!

So how do you still satisfy your love of shiny things? Inspiration struck when the one shiny thing Merle did “borrow”, accidentally turned into a magical beanstalk when they dropped it mid-flight in a panic of being arrested.

The beanstalk proved to be the perfect place to set up the World’s Dinkiest Art Exchange Beanstalk. A gallery where artists can donate their shiny work for all to see. And a place where art lovers can also take art home with them too.

Now that Merle has a world-famous art gallery, people aren’t laughing so much, and Merle gets to enjoy a steady flow of beautiful artworks to admire.

Dinky facts

  • This is our non-dinkiest Dinky Door to date. A whopper at 1.6m high!

  • We’re especially grateful to the Birdwood Area Residents Association who wanted us to make a door for them, and for Cambridge City Council who helped to fund it.

  • It took over 6 months to make, and it’s made entirely out of welded stainless steel.
